Description: The Centro de Ciências do Mar (CCMAR) is an autonomous research center based at the University of Algarve, Portugal and is part of the CIMAR, Associated Laboratory, the largest marine research institute in Portugal. CCMAR currently has around 200 researchers, including 83 Ph.D. and 114 graduates. Research in CCMAR focuses on various aspects of marine life and ecosystems, including environmental technologies and the study and management of fisheries resources. CCMAR is a non-profit organization, with research activities mainly supported by projects funded by the National Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), and various programs of the European Union, FEDER, Ciência Viva, and other entities. A total of 86 projects were carried out from 2002 to 2007, with a total amount of funding of around EUR 8 million, and 480 articles were published in international journals (indexed in SCI). The research developed in CCMAR has integrated several networks of excellence (Marine Genomics, Alginet, among others) financed by the European Union and the U.S. National Science Foundation.  Involvement of a Ph.D. student is planned by CCMAR.
